Illinois Institute of Technology professor and architectural historian, Michelangelo Sabatino and fellow architectural historian Susan Benjamin, present a book talk on their collaboration “Modern in the Middle: Chicago Houses 1929-1975.” The co-authors will explore the significant yet often overlooked influence of Chicago and its suburbs on the development of modern single-family houses during the mid-twentieth century. Their individual and collective backgrounds promise an engaging and insightful discussion on the architectural, social, and economic history of the Chicago area. The Barrington area is a nexus of these homes including designs from noteworthy architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Keck & Keck, Ed Dart, and Harry Weese. Dart and Weese both lived in Barrington and were prolific designers.
This event is paired with a tour of mid-century modern homes, the “Mid Mod Barrington” tour, and a fundraiser held by the Barrington Area Council on Aging. This tour will be held on Saturday, October 19th and tickets can be purchased here.
NOTE: This event is entirely in-person. No virtual tickets are available. If you are having trouble registering, please contact us at culturalevents@barringtonswhitehouse.com or 224-512-4066.
